Power

A power interruption for even a fraction of a second is enough to cause a server failure. It's important to carefully estimate your data center power requirements based on the devices (including support equipment) currently in use, as well as those anticipated for future growth.

The measures you employ to prevent disruptions should be based on the level of reliability required. Common practices include:

Cooling

Servers and other hardware are getting smaller and more powerful to accommodate the need for high-density data center installations. Because this concentrates an enormous amount of heat into a smaller area, adequate cooling equipment is a must.

With electricity costs rising, it's important to create a plan that increases cooling efficiency and lowers energy use. Hot/cold aisle configuration in the server center allows cold air from the cold aisle to be drawn through facing racks of equipment. The hot air exhausts out the backs in to hot aisles, where it can efficiently be drawn back into the cooling unit.

Cables managed in this way improve network reliability by reducing the possibility of cable damage and bend radius violations, as well as reduce the time and money required to identify, route, and reroute cables in the future.
